Our fiduciary responsibility is to ensure that iKhaya is properly managed through ensuring good governance of finances, staff, and property. Our generative responsibility is to ensure that iKhaya maintains an atmosphere that is as close to a family home as possible and that Christ is honoured as he should be in the home. Mancom is blessed to have professional team members with medical, architectural, engineering, human resources, church ministry and corporate leadership backgrounds. Most of all we are blessed with the unmistakable inspiration of the Holy Spirit who is our constant Counsellor. Staff members are carefully selected through an interview process that looks primarily at their commitment to Jesus Christ as their personal saviour and at their love for children. These ladies carry a weighty responsibility to care for children who often come to us with significant health and social issues. Training is provided and includes child care, basic medical care, and HIV/AIDS patient care. iKhaya is located on the campus of Solid Ground Church and is a ministry of the church. iKhaya’s constitution requires that there are at least three of the church’s elders on the Mancom because it is the churches view that the solution to poverty lies in the practice of good governance. Family: Caregivers and volunteers work hard to foster a sense of family by spending quality time with each child individually and in participating in group activities with the children. The children are given their own bed, cupboards, clothes, and personal belongings in order to give them the sense of ownership and individuality. However, the children are taught to share and take turns with the other children just as they would with siblings. At iKhaya every child is loved and shown how to love. Holistic and Comprehensive Care: This includes medical testing and treatment, clothing, nutritional diet, childhood development assessments and activities that are recreational. A few of our children are HIV positive and are cared for according to the best available protocols and caregivers are specifically trained in their care. Education: The children who come to iKhaya likaBaba arrive between 0-5 years of age. We aim to ensure that developmental games, activities and play create an environment rich with learning experiences and as close as possible to the environment that these children would have experienced in a stable loving home. We run an educational play group for the children who are not yet at school. Recreation: The children are taken on several outings each year: to the beach, the petting zoo, and other age-appropriate locations. At iKhaya, they have an indoor play room as well as two outdoor playgrounds. The volunteers organize teaching moments and play centres as well as encouraging the children to use their imaginations and create play scenarios of their own. This ensures that each child is given due protection and holistic care. Restoration, Adoption and Foster Care: We work closely with each child’s assigned social worker, and with adoption agencies, to place the child back with his/her family or in a loving foster or adoptive family as soon as possible. Alone we can make a difference but together we can rock the world!
